Course Information:
Target Audience: This session is intended for municipal officials and staff who communicate with stakeholders as a part of their job, and who wish to gain new tools and skills.
Overview: The session will cover numerous communications topics including:
- Best practices for internal and external communications
- Controlling the narrative
- Perception of local government vs. reality
- Barriers to effective communications
- Effective social media management
- Developing a formal communications plan
- Crisis communication, including identifying when a crisis exists, dos and don’ts, developing chains of crisis communications command, and “the Golden Hour.”
Format: Interactive instruction, including breakout rooms and group activities surrounding communications planning and execution.
Objectives: Attendees will leave with actionable steps to build robust community connections through proactive communications, start developing the basis of a strong communications plan, and effectively plan for communicating during crises.
Please note there is NO option for multiple attendees to join the meeting together, all participants must register and join the meeting separately.

Registrants will receive their Zoom link and meeting details directly from Zoom no later than 24 hours in advance. An official workshop confirmation from MMA will follow with further instructions and access to meeting materials.

Cancellations for MMA Webinars:
Cancellations must be submitted using this Cancellation form?to cancel your registration for an event. Cancellations received on/after 10/27/2025 will be charged a $15 cancellation fee. Any registrant who does not attend and does not cancel their registration (i.e., no-show) and any cancellation received the day of the event will be charged the full registration fee. Registration substitutions are permitted for registrants within the same municipality/organization and will be assessed a $15 substitution fee. Please email wsreg@memun.org to request a registration substitution. Registration transfers to a future training offering are not permitted.
